Yellow had never thought of herself as special. She had spent her days living in the Viridian Forest, whiling peaceful days away under the trees. She lived in a well-kept house with her grandfather, who taught her everything she could have learned at pretrainer school and more. Yellow learned about flowers and herbs and their uses, to care for all living things, big and small, and about the value of peace over war. She spent her time reading the ancient tomes and dusty adventure novels her grandfather kept on shelves all over the house. Together with her best friend, a Ratatta she called Ratty, the two of them would go wading in the creek that ran through the Viridian Forest. They looked for stones and other treasures swept down with the stream, and sat on the bank and watched the water flow by, between their toes and paws for a brief second until it was swept along with the lazy current to a new destination, never to be seen by them again. Yellow had never been out of the forest in her lifetime, and thus she had never met another human being other than her grandfather.
But one night when she was only six years old, the young girl had been taking a stroll through the forest alone. She followed the creek upstream, going farther than she had ever ventured before, until the creek widened into a river. Before long she heard the sound of churning, tumbling water pounding mutedly onto rock. Breaking into run, she came to a waterfall, with the moon's reflection wavering on the sheet of silver water. There was something floating in the shallows, too covered by shadow to make out. Following an instinct, Yellow waded slowly to the figure. It was a boy, battered and beaten by the protruding rocks of the river. Yellow's heart beat quicker. She grasped his hand, dragging him onto the shore and setting him gently on dry land. He still did not move. The girl put his face in her hands, suddenly realizing that his head was covered in something sticky and warm. Following some unspoken urge, she closed her eyes, and an aura began to emanate from her hands to the boy. Slowly the wound closed and the blood disappeared, vanishing into the air as the damage done was healed by the girl's touch. Slowly he opened his eyes, and fiery red met patient blue. Then they slid closed and he relaxed in her arms. She stayed with him the entire night, stroking his spiky black hair, until the sun peaked over the trees and the boy awoke.
He sat up stiffly and blinked. "Did you save me?"
Yellow paused, then nodded. "Who are you?" she asked.
The boy smiled. "I'm Red. Thanks for pulling me from the river. I owe you one. In fact- here." He slipped one of the fingerless gloves he wore off his hand and offered it to Yellow. She took it and ran the worn material through her hands. Looking back up at the boy, she saw that he couldn't have been older than nine years of age.
"Well, thanks again," he said, standing up. "I'd better get going. My mom's gonna kill me for not coming back before dark." A mischievous glitter appeared in his eyes. "Later," was all he said before he walked off, looking back to nod his thanks to her. Then he tore off into the forest as the dawn light spread through the trees, warming the forest from a long night's slumber.
For several moments after the boy disappeared from sight, Yellow stared after him, mesmerized by her first meeting with another person. Finally she realized that she was still holding the glove on her hands. With trembling fingers she slipped it on, breathless to find that it somehow fit perfectly.

"Red...I think I'll remember that name."
